ProPakistani’s Picks for the Best Smartphones of 2019

It’s hard to believe but 2019 is already coming to an end. As far as the smartphone market is concerned, there hasn’t been a better year yet. From foldable screens to 5G connectivity, smartphones are evolving faster than ever before. Many smartphones launched in 2019 offer bleeding-edge technology, but does something like ‘The Best’ smartphone exist? Unfortunately, no.

There are many factors that go into deciding what smartphone is worthy of being called the best, and the best 2019-launched smartphone is not necessarily going to be the same for everyone. Thus, here we are with ProPakistani’s Editors’ Picks for the best smartphone of 2019.

Editors’ Picks

iPhone 11 (Syed Talal):

Compared to Android, iPhones have traditionally lacked in one major area: value.

They were more expensive and the cheaper ones had obvious tradeoffs. Even if you got the “budget” iPhones, you felt you were getting less phone for your money compared to what you’d get with an Android. That changed this year.

The iPhone 11 beats competition from Android at the same price range and it’s the first iPhone I’d recommend without any hesitation for anyone looking to get into the Apple ecosystem.

The cameras on the iPhone 11 are the same as the ones on the more expensive Pro series, minus the zoom lens. The result is best in class shots whether you’re shooting photos or videos.

Apple has also improved battery life and addressed an area where iPhones have suffered over the last few years.

It’s not all great though. The 720p LCD is a concern, I admit, but the quality of the panel is absolutely fantastic and frankly, unless you’re comparing side by side with a 1080p panel, you aren’t really going to notice a lot of difference in day to day usage.

With iPhone 11, Apple has made the right compromises and for that, it deserves a spot among the top phones of the year

Moto Razr 2019 (Samir Yawar):

When it comes to foldable smartphones, 2019 was a pretty blessed year. From Samsung to Huawei to Motorola, we saw a handful of folding smartphones being launched. However, for a nostalgia-tinged tech fan like me, Moto Razr 2019 stole the show.

It’s snazzy. Its foldy. Let’s admit it. Most of us were completely blown away by how Motorola married form and function with its revitalized Razr. This is a foldable phone that has got people talking again. Given how Samsung and Huawei have failed to impress people, that’s quite a turnaround for the Moto brand. Although the smartphone is not on sale yet and Motorola has ditched the previously promised launch date, from all the demos we have seen, the Razr has clearly made smartphones exciting again.

OnePlus 7 Pro (Aadil Shadman and Haamiz Ahmed)

OnePlus, after years of walking under the shadow of top OEMs like Apple and Samsung, has finally forged a new path for itself with the release of the truly bezel-less OnePlus 7 Pro. It looks like the flagship killer is all grown up now.

When it comes to the features of OnePlus 7 Pro, there is a lot to talk about, however, it smooth and notch-less display with 90 Hz refresh rate tops everything else. OnePlus 7 Pro is what popularized the high refresh rate. The smartphone does everything a flagship should do, that too, at a lower price. Even though as compared to OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus 7 Pro has been launched at a higher price tag, it is a deal stealer as compared to other flagships launched in the same time frame.

Even though the lack of water and dust resistance is slightly annoying, this is not a deal-breaker. OnePlus 7 Pro is still the best Android smartphone with very good value for money. Also, Oxygen OS is a highlight thanks to the smooth and consistently reliable UI.

Redmi K20 Pro (Danish Taleef):

Xiaomi’s Redmi K20 Pro is still one of the best deals in smartphones right now. Why? Well for starters, it is red. Have you seen a phone that looks better than the K20 Pro? Although subjective, probably not. Very few smartphones on the market provide features that are the best of both worlds (aesthetics and internals). The K20 Pro is one of the few. The glass and metal sandwich feels luxurious in the hand and performs like a champ.

This 2019-launched smartphone is a complete package when it comes to featuring flagship specifications. The best part is, it costs half of the most affordable flagship mentioned in this list. Of course, I am referring to the common fan favorite the OnePlus 7 Pro. This flagship killer also features over the top camera specifications. The cherry on top is the Bezel-less and buttery smooth AMOLED display. The only thing the OnePlus 7 Pro has over this is the 90 Hz display, but does that one feature justify an extra $400? Not likely.

Redmi Note 8 Pro (Aasil Ahmed):

Xiaomi has clearly outdone itself this year. This is the second Redmi smartphone that made it to ProPakistani’s Picks for best smartphones 2019. The Chinese giant knows how to roll out a smartphone that offers the best value for money. Even though the Redmi Note 8 Pro slightly lacks in the software arena, for me, this is not a huge deal.

The fact that it features a 64 MP quad-sensor camera with 960FPS Slow-mo, UFS storage and RAM as high as 8 GB at a mid-range price is enough for me to make this smartphone a favorite. Not to mention the near-flagship SoC it boasts on top of a large battery. The robust hardware and high value for money overcome minor software limitations. Best of luck finding such specifications in this price segment.

Huawei Nova 6 (Mahnoor Nadeem)

Despite all the pressure due to the US-China trade ban fiasco, Huawei is still afloat and rising. On top of this, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is still sending out smartphones like the Nova 6. Even though Huawei can do better when it comes to aesthetics, internally, the smartphone is flawless except for the fact that it is built around an LCD.

However, the internals have me drooling. Huawei’s Nova 6 comes with flagship-level SoC, amazing memory specifications and top-notch camera sensors. I don’t mind ditching the AMOLED display for this. Not to mention, the Nova 6 brings all this to the table at an upper mid-range price. I don’t see a better option here.

Conclusion

This year was all about launching smartphones with cutting edge hardware. Even though OnePlus, Apple and Samsung got the lion’s share, other OEMs were trading blows as well.
