Samsung Unveils a Zero-Bezel 8K Smart TV

Samsung Electronics kicked off the CES with a bang this year. The Korean tech giant unveiled its biggest showcase to date with its new 88-inch and 150-inch Micro LED monitors, the bezel-less QLED 8K TV, and a trio of Sero rotating TVs. Apart from this, the company also detailed other screen and audio products in other exploration zones.

The most eye-catching of these was the practically bezel-less QLED display that goes right to the edge. I am talking about the extra-large 8K TV dubbed Q950TS showcased by Samsung. Unlike other TVs with 8K resolution, this one is about more than just resolution.

Design and Display

Samsung’s next-gen QLED 8K TV comes with a super-thin frame around the screen. It is almost impossible to make out the bezels when you look at it straight on. According to Samsung, the TV has been designed to eliminate the bezels around the display to create a screen-to-body ratio of nearly 99 percent, which is currently the largest screen-to-body ratio in the market.

If you watch the TV from 10 feet to 15 feet away, the display looks like an infinity screen that provides the users with a more immersive experience. The super-thin bezels were achieved by eliminating the black matrix around the edge of the panel. Hence, the picture goes right up to the metallic edge. Moreover, despite having a full-array local dimming (FALD), the TV is only 15mm thick.

More Than a Fancy 8K TV

Since 8K TVs are super expensive, only providing a modest perceivable quality improvement over 4K TVs and with no 8K content available currently, sales are tepid and will remain so for the upcoming years. Hence, to make it appealing and interesting, Samsung is touting more than just high resolution on this TV.

It comes with a FALD backlight that features a new local power distribution technology improving the overall brightness by more than 20 percent. It also controls blooming i.e. stray illumination.

Uses AI to Improve Picture Quality

The new processor added to the TV is also better with AI upscaling. Hence, the TV will have a deep learning neural network and will be able to teach itself algorithms to improve picture quality. On top of this, this next-gen TV features top-notch antiglare tech with improved viewing angles similar to the company’s flagship models.

For smooth streaming, the TV features AI ScaleNet that optimizes the available network bandwidth. According to Samsung it “compresses content as it leaves the content provider and then restores it after it reaches the TV to effectively cut in half the bandwidth needed for consumers to stream content.”

5.1 Surround Sound Despite Minimal Bezels

As far as the sound performance is concerned, the Q950 boasts speakers on the side of the display and sub-woofers at the back. These speakers are combined with Object Tracking Sound+ which uses AI-based software to match the movement of audio with the movement of objects on the screen.

Samsung claims that the TV can deliver “crisp and clear 5.1 channel surround-sound”.

Pricing and Availability

Samsung has not revealed the pricing details of the Q950TS but it is guaranteed to be very expensive. Even though the TV gives us a ‘glimpse into the future technology’ it would have been better if the Korean tech giant also unveiled a more affordable 4K model with similar features for the masses.
