GM Teases an All-Electric 1000 Horsepower Hummer

American carmaker General Motors has announced that they are bringing the Hummer nameplate back for a 1000 horsepower all-electric pickup that will do 0 to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds.

The company teased the Hummer before the Super Bowl and will unveil it on 20th May with launch scheduled for late 2021. It will be created and sold under the GMC brand at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck factory the site where GM is investing $2.2 billion to mass-produce electric vehicles.

The company is resurrecting the Hummer after discontinuing it in 2010. At that time, it had become a symbol for everything that was wrong with the pre-financial crisis excess. Then came the global recession, fuel prices went up and Hummer sales fell drastically, forcing the company to kill it.

In the last decade, SUVs and pickups have become dominant in sales despite the increase in emissions. Other companies too have tried to bank on the nostalgia factor and GM is also betting on it. For now, there are plenty of electric SUVs on the road but the same can’t be said for the electric pickup market.

That is set to change with Ford’s all-electric F-150 and Tesla’s Cybertruck.
