Samsung Note 20 Series Could Come With a Waterfall Display

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series launched last week but that doesn’t stop leaks about the next best phone from Samsung: Note 20. The leak shows off a patent of what could be a major design element for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series.

A Waterfall Display

The patent was granted to Samsung by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and it shows off a new design for future Samsung phones including, possibly, the Note 20 series.

While some of Samsung’s recent phones that use a curved display have the screen kind of melting on to the side of the phone, the buttons were still placed on the aluminum frame around the display. This new “waterfall” display, however, suggests that the display will wrap around the edges of the phone and the buttons on the side of the phone will go through the glass. This is similar to the Mi Mix Alpha which Xiaomi released last year.

Although the patent shows buttons protruding off the side of the phone, what’s not shown is whether the bent glass will have extra functionality such as touch controls.

This is something that has been done by Huawei in the past with the Mate 30 series and while it wasn’t perfect, we could make the case that Samsung might be able to implement this better than they did.

More sensors

Samsung is also planning to take the sensor game to a whole new level by including a wide variety of sensors, as the patent suggests. According to Patently Mobile, some of the sensors that were listed on the patent were a gesture sensor, a gyro sensor, a grip sensor, an electrocardiogram sensor (ECG), an electromyography sensor (EMG) and some others well.

To top it all off, the patent also mentioned a holographic projector of some kind. According to Samsung, “the display may further include a control circuit for controlling the panel, the hologram device and/or the projector.”

In any case, it’s too early to speculate on the Note 20’s design. Major companies often file patents of quirky devices like this that never see the light of day.
