Pakistan Just One Match Away From Losing the Number 1 T20I Ranking

Pakistan have retained their number 1 ranking in T20Is by a slight margin after Australia completed the series win over South Africa last night. Fortunately for Pakistan, the Aussies won it by a margin of 2-1, meaning that Pakistan’s number 1 ranking is safe for now. As Ian Smith would say, Pakistan managed to cling on to the top spot “by the barest of all margins.”

Before the series, Australia (269) were only one point behind Pakistan (270). Pakistan had to win the Bangladesh series 3-0 to finish at 271 points, however, with one of the T20Is washed out, Pakistan ended up on 270 points.

Australia, on the other hand, had to clean-sweep South Africa to dethrone Pakistan at the top of the table, however, they lost the 2nd T20I despite being in a winning position.

ICC is yet to update its T20I rankings, and it remains to be seen how the teams stand after the South Africa-Australia series. The difference between Pakistan and Australia should be in decimal points right now.

In other words, Pakistan’s single loss or Australia’s single victory could dethrone Pakistan from the top spot.

Australia’s next assignment is against New Zealand in March, whereas Pakistan will play its next T20Is against Ireland and England in August and September.
