Suzuki to Finally Discontinue 2nd Generation Swift in Pakistan

As reported by Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) is finally discontinuing the 2nd generation Suzuki Swift in the Pakistani Market. The report suggests that an official letter has informed the PSMC stakeholders of the car’s discontinuation by August next year.

The car was introduced back in 2010. Initially, it was only offered with a manual transmission and a 1.3 liter petrol engine, but a year or 2 later, Suzuki also added an automatic transmission option and that was the only improvement we ever saw in the car for the longest time.

However, that is not to say that the 2nd gen Swift was a bad car. When it was launched in Pakistan, there was nothing quite like it in the market at the time. The car was light-weight, had a wide stance, a short wheelbase, and a fairly powerful 1.3 liter DOHC engine, all of which made the car rather fun to drive. It was also a reliable option, with parts easily available in any market.

Still, after 5 years of successful sales, the Pakistani market did agree to the fact that the 2nd Swift is overstaying its welcome. The prices started skyrocketing, but little to no changes were made to the car that could do justice to the increasing prices.

Plus, in the 10 years where the Swift was sold in Pakistan, the world had moved on and received 2 more generations of the car internationally. And after the Coronavirus induced lockdowns, the writing was clearly on the wall for Suzuki to make a decision quickly, due to over 60% decrease in sales figures.

The report also suggests that Suzuki shall be introducing the 4th gen Suzuki Swift to the market to replace the 2nd gen model. Details are scarce about the replacement as of yet, but this change is likely to be received well among the buyers.
