Islamabad Excise Dept. to Use E-Tagging to Limit Vehicle Theft

Due to the recent increase in car theft across the capital city, Islamabad Excise & Taxation Department has decided to issue E-Tags for vehicles. The E-Tag, which will feature a coded identification number, shall be pasted on to the vehicle’s windshield or number plate.

As per the reports, the same identification number shall be kept in the excise department’s own database, to which, the identification number on the E-Tag shall be synced. These E-Tags shall help the department search for and identify the stolen vehicles through a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system.

Upon this development, Director Excise & Taxation Department Islamabad Bilal Azam said,

Going forward, the department shall also issue an E-Tag along with the vehicle’s number plate, which will be stamped either onto the windshield or the number plate itself. This tag shall entail the entire information of the vehicle against its coded identification number.

The road-checking teams shall be given the RFID readers. These devices shall help verify the entire information of the vehicle as it passes through the check-post, as to whether or not the taxes and token of the vehicle has been paid for or if the car is genuine or not. Furthermore, if there’s any update made in the vehicle information in the database, the same update would automatically be synced with the RFID number in the E-Tag.

The director commented that this development is another major step towards the Digital Pakistan initiative and that it will not only reduce vehicle theft but also help the department generate revenue.
