General Secretary Pakistan National Heart Association (PANHA), Sanaullah Ghumman, has said that soft drinks can cause diabetes, obesity, heart, stomach, and other ailments.
Addressing a meeting of PANHA’s board members, Ghumman stressed on a policy to ensure people abstain from sugary drinks as much as possible.

He suggested that the government should impose heavy taxes on sugary drinks as it could decrease their consumption while underscoring the need for raising awareness about the detrimental effects of sugary drinks.
Ghumman also referred to a study published last year in Health Line magazine which claimed that 2 or more sugary drinks per day increase the risk for early death from all causes, adding that it doesn’t matter if the drink is sweetened with sugar or artificial ingredients.

The study’s researchers concluded that excess sugar increases the risk of digestive health problems as well as Parkinson’s disease besides heart problems, diabetes, and obesity.
PANHA’s vision is to educate the general public and spread awareness about heart diseases and to train people in saving precious lives by resuscitating cardiac arrest victims on the spot through CPR-BLS.
