Teachers Suggest Delaying Annual Exams For Matric & Intermediate Students

Teachers all over Pakistan have recommended pushing Matriculation and Intermediate examinations beyond September 2021 to make up for the loss of learning due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent closure of educational institutions.

According to a survey titled “Pakistani Teachers Response to COVID-19” carried out by Zindagi Trust, schools in Winter Zone have a two-week summer break and three-month winter break in comparison to schools in Summer Zone which have a longer summer break and a shorter winter break.

As the reopening of schools from 15 September has recently been notified by the federal government, Winter Zone’s students scheduled to appear in the 2021 Matriculation and Intermediate examinations will only have 12 weeks to cover the syllabus of the entire 2020-21 academic year before the winter break.

Students in Summer Zone’s schools will be rejoining schools after the summer break, meaning they will have around 24 weeks to cover the syllabus of the 2020-21 academic year.

In order to cover the loss of learning of students in both zones, teachers across Pakistan have suggested scheduling the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations for the 2020-21 academic year after September 2021.

They have also proposed to organize the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations for the 2021-22 academic year in May 2022 whereas for 2022-23, the normal schedule has been proposed. Things can get back to normal i.e. exams can be conducted in March 2023 for the academic year 2022-23.
