Google Maps is Rolling Out a COVID-19 Layer for Safe Traveling

Since February this year, the coronavirus pandemic has created a rift in our daily lives. Everything from schools, industries, work-life, and traveling has been majorly affected. Even though, since the past month, things have started going back to normal the pandemic is far from over. Thus, authorities are advising individuals to maintain social distancing to avoid exposure.

Keeping this in mind, Google Maps is introducing a new layer for Maps on mobile devices that will give essential information about the rate of infections.

Like all the layers, this ‘COVID-19 info’ layer will also be available via the Layer button right below the profile picture. It gives a seven-day average data of the new and recent coronavirus cases per 100,000 people.

The data is displayed next to an arrow revealing whether the cases have been increasing in the neighborhood or decreasing. Apart from this, the data is displayed on the map with appropriate color coding.

The data has been made available for all 220 countries and territories that Google Maps supports, along with detailed info on states, provinces, counties, and cities.

As far as the data is concerned, it has been gathered from public sources like Johns Hopkins University, the New York Times, and Wikipedia. It is the same data that surfaces when searching for COVID cases on Google.
