ITP Shuts Down Traffic License Services Again

Just over a week after the resumption of driver’s license issuance services, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has closed the doors again amid fears of COVID-19 resurgence in the capital city.

A notice outside the Islamabad Traffic Police headquarters in sector F-8 read that all traffic licensing operations have been put on a hold again until further notice due to coronavirus spread. Citizens can call 051-9261992-93 for further queries, it said.

On October 4, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) resumed driver’s license issuance services after a pause of over 6 months. The department had told the media that they shall be carrying out their duties while ensuring stern enforcement of the state-issued COVID-19 related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

A maximum of 250 tokens were being issued per day on a ‘first come first served’ basis to avoid crowding and maintain safe distance inside the office. The fears of coronavirus resurgence, however, have prompted the authorities to keep a close check on places of potential spread and take necessary measures to avoid another outbreak.

Lately, a surge in new COVID-19 cases has been reported in the twin cities as educational institutions and businesses resume full-scale operations. On 11 October, Islamabad reimposed a ‘mini smart’ lockdown in various areas after an increase in COVID-19 cases was reported in the city.
