Xiaomi Will Reduce Plastic in Smartphone Packaging by 60%

Smartphone companies are slowly moving towards more eco-friendly products by using recycled materials in their handsets as well as reducing the amount of plastic in the packaging. Apple was the first to reduce the size of its Smartphone packaging but the decision was controversial as they also removed the charger and earbuds from iPhone’s packaging.

Now Xiaomi has just announced that they will be reducing plastic in their packaging by 60%.

The company announced the news on Twitter where it said that the packages with reduced plastic will hit Europe first and the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite will be the first to take that step. Keep in mind that this only refers to the retail box and buyers will still get every item inside including a protective case, a USB C charger, etc.

Xiaomi commits to reducing  the plastic used in its packaging by 60%, is keeping the charger

The move appears to be a subtle jab at Apple as they recently removed the charger from the iPhone 12’s retail box in order to keep it eco-friendly. It isn’t yet clear how much plastic is being saved in Xiaomi’s packages, but we do know that the box is mostly cardboard.

It appears that the charger is here to stay in Xiaomi’s case and we hope it stays that way especially for flagships as 65W – 80W – 100W chargers are a lot harder to come by compared to 18W chargers.

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite is shipping to Europe tomorrow for €250 in Rose Gold and Atlantic Blue colors.
