Govt. Proposes 15 March As International Day Against Islamophobia

Federal government has decided to propose 15 March to be officially declared as the ‘International Day against Islamophobia’ at the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

In this regard, the Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, said that the decision has been taken at the directive of Prime Minister Imran Khan in the wake of rising Islamophobia across the globe.

On 15 March 2019, two consecutive mass shootings occurred at two mosques in a terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday Prayer.

At least 51 people, including 9 Pakistanis, were martyred and 40 sustained injuries in the terrorist attack. 44 people were martyred at the Al Noor Mosque while 7 were martyred at the Linwood Islamic Centre.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan penned a letter to CEO Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, urging the latter to enforce a ban on Islamophobic content on Facebook, a ban similar to that in place on the social media platform against Holocaust.

The premier’s letter followed the printing of blasphemous cartoons in France-based weekly magazine, Charlie Hebdo, and subsequent comments of French President Emmanuel Macron, vowing not to give up on the publication of blasphemous cartoons.

Earlier today, French Ambassador to Pakistan, Marc Barety, was summoned to the Foreign Office where Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi formally registered Pakistan’s protest against the publication of blasphemous cartoons and French President Emmanuel Macron’s anti-Islam remarks.
