Govt Confirms Second Wave of COVID-19 Is Underway in Pakistan

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, says that the second wave of coronavirus has begun in Pakistan. He made these remarks while addressing a news conference on Tuesday.

Dr. Faisal called for strict restrictions to control the sharp spike in COVID-19 deaths and the positivity ratio across the country.

Prime Minister’s aide informed that 400 to 500 cases were recorded daily a few weeks ago in Pakistan, which has risen to 700-750 per day.

The coronavirus death rate has increased in the country. The positivity ratio had surged to 2.5-2.75%.

Dr. Faisal criticized the general public for flaunting COVID-19 precautions, mistaking that the pandemic is over.

He added that Pakistan needs to focus on areas with a higher positivity ratio as the country is entering a phase where we need to tighten coronavirus restrictions. He said that the government will soon present a plan to curb the spread.

PM’s aide said that the health experts are mulling over a few plans and proposals to enforce restrictive measures to stem the deadly virus.

He urged local administrations to ensure implementation of the COVID-19 SOPs and urged that a fine be imposed on individuals who don’t follow Covid protocols in public places.

Dr. Faisal also suggested reverting to old business hours as were during the lock.

He believed that country would defeat the second wave if people follow precautions. He added that the government plans to set up a hotline for the public, where people could complain about the violations in public places.

As per the National Command and Control Center’s (NCOC) data, the country reported 850 new coronavirus infections during the last 24 hours, pushing the national tally of infections to 330,200. With 14 more virus-related death on Tuesday, Pakistan’s death toll reached 6,759 deaths.
