Usman Buzdar Approves a Proposal for Electric Vehicles to Prevent Smog

In a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar reviewed the plans to deal with smog this year. The minister approved the proposal presented to him, which suggested the installation of biogas plants and the normalization of electric vehicles in Punjab.

Also present at the meeting were the Finance Minister, Hashim Jawan Bakht, Chief Secretary, Senior Member Board of Revenue, Additional Chief Secretary, secretaries of agriculture, transport, industries, environment, energy & housing departments, Deputy Inspector General (Traffic), Direct General Provincial Disaster Management Authority, and other relevant personnel.

The minister was briefed during the proposal that 43% of the smog is contributed to, by the smoke and harmful gases emitted by the vehicles. Reports state that 204 FIRs have been filed in the past couple of days on account of smog-inducing activities and 11,685 challans have been issued to smoke emitting vehicle owners.

Also, 109 industries have also been subjected to legal action for contributing to the increasing smog within the region. Also, the members of the meeting reached the consensus to shut down the conventional brick kilns from November 7th, 2020. However, this decision shall not apply to the brick kilns built based on the ‘zig-zag technology’.

A European electric bus manufacturing company, EGV, has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) and will invest $4 billion to set up an electric bus manufacturing plant in Pakistan. This is the 2nd big electric bus manufacturer to enter Pakistan. 2 months ago, Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service also formed an alliance with Skywell Automobile, a Chinese automaker, to introduce electric buses in Pakistan.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, said in the signing ceremony that these ventures are not only intended to boost economic growth and create new job opportunities but are also intended to serve as a major stepping stone in the prime minister’s vision of clean and green Pakistan.
