We Will Not Tolerate Anti-Islamic or Anti-Pakistan Content on Any Platform: IT Minister

The Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Syed Aminul Haque declared on Thursday that propaganda against national security, insults against state institutions, anti-Islamic and anti-social values, and hate speech to sabotage religious harmony will not be tolerated either on social media or on any other platform.

This was stated by the minister as he presided over the ninth meeting of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on IT and Telecom in Islamabad on Thursday. The meeting was also attended by the Federal Secretary for IT and Telecom, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, Dr. Atta-Ur-Rehman, and other members of the task force.

The minister further said that certain social media rules have been approved by the Cabinet, after which a formal notification has been issued by the Ministry of IT.

The minister also expressed serious concerns regarding the sealing of the Jazz Network head office on tax matters a few days ago by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and maintained that such actions are not permissible both for future foreign investors and Pakistan’s economy.

Haque informed the attendees that the closure of the head office of Jazz Network by the FBR was not a desirable act. He said that other measures could have been taken by the FBR instead of sealing the office, and that the other companies working in networking in Pakistan and future foreign investors have been notified about it.

“Concerns have been raised that cannot be welcomed by the country’s economy. We strive to ensure that this does not happen in the future with any IT or telecommunications company,” he added.

The minister said that while the closure of social media applications will never be supported, no concession can be made if it is a matter of national security and public interest.

Haque said that the application TikTok was temporarily shut down a few days ago, and a clear position was given that the closure of any application is not the solution to the problem but that this was done to bring the users into the ambit of rules and regulations. He added that it is important to move in the right direction and that the government is working hard to achieve this milestone.

“We are focused on Pakistan and maintained a principled position everywhere that Pakistan is a staunch supporter of any innovation and business development in the field of construction and information technology,” he said.

Haque also explained that the government is providing facilities and opening up a vast Pakistani market for huge profits, but that everyone must abide by Pakistani rules on national security, hate speech, and immoral data.

The attendees of the meeting were also apprised of the positive discussions being held with the Chief Minister of Sindh regarding a reduction in sales tax on the export of IT products in Sindh. They expressed their satisfaction with the ongoing and future plans for the installation of Mobile towers and the extension of mobile phone connections through fiber optics, and the improvement and provision of broadband services.
