Sindh Govt Finally Launches Smart Cards to Replace Vehicle Registration Booklets

After multiple announcements during the previous weeks, the Government of Sindh has finally launched registration smart cards to replace registration booklets. The Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) smart cards will be computer-readable and will contain information about the registered vehicle from its registration status to the token-tax payment records.

Speaking to a local media outlet, the Provincial Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla remarked that the new smart cards will be beneficial to the regulators, law enforcers, and the general public in various ways.

He said that the new smart cards will eliminate the nuisances related to fake vehicle registrations and will enable law enforcement agencies to determine vehicle ownership more efficiently, thereby curbing the prospect of vehicle theft in the city.

The minister reiterated that the excise and taxation department has introduced an online tax payment facility for motorists. He added that the online tax payment facility is majorly aimed at conveniencing the general public.

Reports also suggest that the government had to amend the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1965 and pass the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2020 to incorporate the provision of smart cards for the registration of vehicles in the current motor vehicle registration law. Minister Chawla also reminded the media that the government is working on providing maximum security and convenience to the law-abiding residents of the city.
