Wasim Akram Says People Think This Youngster Can Replace Shadab Khan

Former Pakistan captain, Wasim Akram, has said that many cricketing experts think young leg-spinner, Usman Qadir, could be the next Shadab Khan for Pakistan. He, however, took exception to this idea.

Akram feels that the two are different kinds of cricketers: Shadab is an all-rounder, while Usman is a genuine leg-spinner.

This guy [Usman] is a genuine leg-spin bowler. Look at his googly and leg-break. The googly comes from the back of the hand – a very difficult delivery to bowl and he was turning the ball both ways today and that troubled the batsmen.

The legendary fast bowler also criticized people who called Qadir a parchi (a product of favoritism).

Sometimes this ‘parchi’ tag angers me – especially when people say he [Usman Qadir] is a parchi. This is not cricket being played in some neighborhoods. Here, if someone is good enough, he will play for Pakistan.

Akram was responding to some sports journalists’ nonsensical claims regarding the young leggie. Qadir is said to have been preferred over Zahid Mahmood – a talented leg-spinner from Sindh – because of his friendship with captain Babar Azam.

But, Wasim believes Qadir is there because of his skills, not nepotism.

Have you seen his variations today? Ok, this was an inexperienced opposition but the variation is there, the leg-break is there. The googly is there, the flipper is there and he’s got control.

Akram’s comments come after Qadir’s notable performances in the first two T20 Internationals against Zimbabwe.

The 27-year-old, the son of legendary Abdul Qadir, made his debut in the first T20I, where he took figures of 1-24 off three overs. He followed that up with an even better performance in the second game and ended up with figures of 3-23 off four overs.
