Recently a slew of Twitter users started complaining about their timelines being taken over by promoted tweets. Typically, promoted tweets which are usually regular tweets that an advertiser has paid to promote more broadly appear once at the top of the timeline. However, reportedly, the promoted tweets are popping up more often. Some users have said that they are seeing them as often as every four to six tweets.

Since Twitter’s business website explains,
We’re thoughtful in how we display Promoted Tweets and are conservative about the number of Promoted Tweets that people see in a single day.
Initially, it was believed that there was a glitch involving the distribution of Promoted Tweets. However, it was later it was revealed that the distribution of tweets was intentional. The company’s spokesperson said,
We regularly experiment and deploy changes to our advertising experience. We are constantly innovating and testing and will continue to adapt as we learn.

Twitter has not addressed the issue through either of its accounts that communicate with the public. Users from around the globe are continually tagging the accounts asking for an explanation. Since the company has not updated anything regarding the new policy, Twitter users have been dealing with the influx of Promoted Tweets by muting or blocking the advertiser’s account. This could have lasting consequences as advertisers won’t be able to reach those users again if they get blocked.
