Twitter Acquires Group Video Chat App ‘Squad’

After announcing that it is pulling the plug on its Periscope Live Streaming App, Twitter has now unveiled that it has acquired the video chat and screen-sharing startup, Squad. The company plans on incorporating the app’s group video chat feature as a new feature on Twitter.

For those who don’t know, the Squad app allowed users to share their screens in both Mobile and desktop settings in group video chat mode.

After Ilya Brown from Twitter’s Product team broke the news via a tweet, the squad app and website were shut down. If you click on the Squad’s website link, it takes you to a landing page that says,

Goodbye, for now…

We are excited to share that Squad has been acquired by Twitter! We are so grateful for all our customers around the world and are excited to build the future on Twitter. Squad shut down on December 12, 2020.

Much love,

According to Twitter, this acquisition will provide new and exciting ways for people to interact, express themselves, and join in the public conversation.  The company believes that interactive audio and video chats are very important requirements in the future direction of the app and align with the type of conversations Twitter is hoping to introduce.

The squad app features will soon be made available on the platform.
