UK Faces Flight Ban After New Deadly Coronavirus Strain Kills Many

Most of the European countries have imposed travel restrictions on the UK after the British government announced the detection of a more infectious strain of Coronavirus in the southern parts of England last week.

Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Bulgaria, Portugal, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, and Switzerland have suspended all kinds of travel to and from the UK.

The European Council of the European Union will further deliberate coordinated action regarding the UK in an emergency meeting that will be held later today.

Besides, a number of countries around the world have also announced to halt travel to and from the UK over fears of transmission of the new strain.

Saudi Arabia, Canada, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia have, so far, suspended travel to and from the UK.

Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced a new tier-four level of restrictions for London and Southern England where the new mutated strain of Coronavirus continues to spread at an alarming rate.

Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, has said that the outbreak of the new and more infectious strain of Coronavirus has spiraled out of control. He added that the government must contain the transmission of the new variant as it is 70% more infectious than the original strain of Coronavirus.

Despite imposing tough lockdown restrictions on 14 December, the UK reported more than 36,000 cases during the last 24 hours. So far, the UK has reported over 2 million cases and 67,000 deaths from COVID-19.
