Zoom is Making an Email and Calendar Service to Compete With Gmail

After having the best year revenue-wise, the video conferencing application Zoom is eager to translate its success elsewhere. According to a recent report, the company is working on its own email service that will launch with a matching calendar app.

We might see the email offering as soon as Q1 2021, however, the calendar app will take time. The leak reveals that the company is aiming for a “next-generation” email technology experience rather than merely replicating what other companies offer. Zoom is probably hoping to create a whole platform where video calls, email, and productivity tools like messaging work together.

The fact that Zoom wants to add more features to its platform is not shocking. Even though the company is enjoying the spotlight since the pandemic started, it knows its popularity might fade as people start going back to their offices. Moreover, there is a high chance that competing services like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams potentially gain more traction. Services like emails and calendars will give Zoom a reason to stick around after the pandemic is over.

The main challenge here, of course, are the giants like Gmail and Outlook that Zoom will be standing against. Both the platforms have massive user bases and tight integration with a host of other services.

From where we are sitting, it seems unlikely that Zoom will be able to win people over with its email and calendar services. The company has refused to comment on the matter.
