Samsung’s Future Phones Will Not Come With Chargers

Soon after mocking Apple for removing chargers from the iPhone’s retail box, Samsung did the exact same with the Galaxy S21. This evoked speculation about whether future Samsung phones will come with chargers or not, which has now been confirmed by Samsung itself.

On a Q&A post on Samsung’s Mobile press page, the Head of Customer Experience Office at Samsung, Patrick Chomet said:

We believe that the gradual removal of charger plugs and earphones from our in-box device packaging can help address sustainable consumption issues and remove any pressure that consumers may feel towards continually receiving unnecessary charger accessories with new phones.

This indicates that Samsung plans to remove chargers, earphones, or any relevant Samsung accessories out of all retail boxes soon. However, as Chomet says, this is going to be a “gradual” change, meaning that it will not affect all devices immediately.

The accessories will likely be removed from flagship phone packaging first, before becoming less common in all Samsung phones. This means that the upcoming foldables or the Galaxy Note 21 may not have a charger in the box, but that is only speculation for now.

The reasons for removal are the same as Apple and Xiaomi, which is for the sake of the environment. It is also because customers are reusing older accessories and including new chargers in the box is starting to become unnecessary.
