Sindh HEC Wants to Register And Monitor All Private Colleges

The Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC), after failing to monitor public universities, has taken up the task to regularize private degree colleges of the province.

Taking advantage of the inactivity of the Department of College Education, the Acting Secretary for Sindh HEC, Moinuddin Siddiqui, increased efforts to register and monitor more than 250 private degree colleges across Sindh, including Karachi.

In this regard, Sindh HEC has constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. Noushad Sheikh. The committee discussed mandating the registration of private colleges with Sindh HEC before affiliation with universities.

Besides Dr. Moinuddin and Dr. Naushad Sheikh, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sukkur University, Dr. Samreen Hussain, and Vice-Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Dr. Tariq Rafi, was also present in the meeting while a representative of Department of College Education, and the Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Dr. Khalid Iraqi, attended the meeting online.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Dr. Naushad Sheikh said that some 250 private degree colleges in Sindh are affiliated with different universities, but only 16 are registered with the Department of College Education.

The rest of the colleges are working without registration. The quality education of these colleges should be monitored, for which their registration is necessary. Either the Department of College Education should register them, or the Sindh HEC should have this option.

It is worth mentioning here that Moinuddin Siddiqui has served on the post for quite some time now, but has failed to play any role in extending Sindh HEC’s role in public universities of the province.

As per this department’s rules, the Grade 19 officer working on the post gets an additional allowance of Rs. 50 to 150,000. This is besides the Rs. 600,000 paid every month in terms of the bungalow’s rent in which the Sindh HEC office is established.
