K-Electric Promises to Reduce Load Shedding This Summer Thanks to New Power Plant

K-Electric’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Monis Alvi promised to reduce the electricity load shedding in Karachi to a minimum before the summer while addressing a press conference at a private hotel in Karachi on Wednesday

The CEO briefed the media on the progress of the Bin Qasim Power Plant-III project through a video presentation and said that the work on it had started in March 2019 and will be completed by March 2021.

He remarked that “In the first phase, 450 MW of electricity will be added to the system,” and added that a gas turbine is being fitted which will start generating another 450 MW by the end of this year.

Alvi highlighted that the addition of 900 MWs would increase K-Electric’s total generation capacity to 3100 MW. He added,

Further, we will soon start receiving 1400 MW from the national grid, which would nearly solve load-shedding problems

The CEO revealed that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has gotten the approval for the supply of RLNG for the Bin Qasim Power Plant III from the government. He stated,

We’re bound by the government’s directives to take electricity from the national grid. We wanted to install a 700-MW power plant but we did not get permission from NEPRA

Alvi categorically rejected the allegations of overbilling by the K-Electric, saying that it could have been due to human error but had not been done intentionally.

He also promised the citizens of Karachi that K-Electric would increase the quality of its services and minimize load shedding.
