PM Orders Economic Team to Come Up With Recommendations to Reduce Taxes on Common Man

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the authorities concerned to accord special emphasis to reduce the burden of indirect taxes on the people.

He was chairing a meeting of his economic team in Islamabad today. The Prime Minister noted that the indirect taxes burden the poor segments of the society the most.

Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio remains low at less than 10 percent – the lowest in the region – despite massive indirect taxes. Direct taxes account for only 36 percent (previously 38 percent) of total tax collection in Pakistan, making indirect taxes the primary revenue collection mode for the government.
