Google Chrome Collects Your Data While in Incognito Mode

Google is on its way to face yet another lawsuit for not disclosing enough information about its services. This time, it is because Google “did not notify” users how Google Chrome continues to collect data on them while Incognito’s privacy mode is active.

This was enough for Judge Lucy Koh to move forward with a class-action lawsuit against Google, which the company tried to deny.

The chief participants in the lawsuit accused the search engine giant of telling its users that their information is private even though it mentions their habits. Google argued that the users had accepted the privacy policy and thus know that Google collects information on them. The company also added that going Incognito does not make you “invisible” and websites, for instance, can still see your activity.

It is unclear whether the lawsuit will be successful or if there will be any meaningful changes or compensation. It may, however, force the company to disclose what information it collects more explicitly.

Meanwhile, Google continues to argue that it clearly states what information it does and does not collect each time you open an Incognito tab. Here is Google’s full statement against the lawsuit.

We strongly dispute these claims and we will defend ourselves vigorously against them. Incognito mode in Chrome gives you the choice to browse the internet without your activity being saved to your browser or device. As we clearly state each time you open a new incognito tab, websites might be able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session.
