Experts Call for Random COVID-19 Sampling in Punjab

On Thursday, Punjab reported 1,824 new cases of Coronavirus, the highest daily tally so far, while 23 people succumbed to the virus across the province.

As the third wave of Coronavirus intensifies, the Punjab government continues to downplay the suggestions of healthcare experts to increase the testing ratio in the country’s largest province.

According to the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department Punjab, 17,127 COVID-19 tests were performed in the province on Thursday while the daily average of new cases has jumped to 1,500.

For comparison, the same number of tests were being performed daily in January and February this year when the daily average of new Coronavirus cases in Punjab was between 400 and 500.

Healthcare experts have termed the current testing numbers ‘inadequate’ and have called for increasing the testing ratio. They have urged the provincial government to introduce random sampling at public places such as parks, markets, and tourist spots.

Note that the Punjab government had introduced random sampling during the first wave of the Coronavirus. The move proved fruitful as it helped the provincial government to devise a counter strategy to curb the transmission of the virus.
