Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and facemasks produced in Pakistan are substandard and low-quality.

According to a study conducted by the National Textile University (NTU), Faisalabad, PPE and facemasks manufactured in the country are not in line with international safety standards and create a false sense of security against the Coronavirus.

During the study, NTU researchers gathered PPE and facemasks from different cities and determined the quality of all samples in NTU’s state-of-the-art textile laboratory.

Experiments showed that particle filtration efficiency of most of the facemasks was less than the required level of 95% because most of them failed to filter 0.3-micrometer particles.

Participle filtration efficiency is an important indicator of the suitability of facemasks for a given application and environment. To be effective in a COVID-19 environment, the face masks are required to block at least 95% of particles of 0.3 micrometers.

What this means is the majority of the facemasks produced in the country do not offer the required level of protection against ultrafine particles and are not recommended for use in a COVID-19 environment.

Instead, these substandard and low-quality facemasks may be a major cause of the spread of COVID-19 disease among healthcare professionals in the country.

NTU has called on the government to enact appropriate policies to implement world-class safety standards in the country and incentivize the industry to allow the adoption of the latest technologies for the production of high-quality PPEs and facemasks.
