Controversy: Younis Khan Says He Has No Say in Team Management

Pakistan’s batting coach, Younis Khan, spoke with sports analysts via video conference on Monday and remarked that some of the underperforming hard-hitters like Asif Ali and Haider Ali will be given more chances to improve on the mistakes that they had made during the tour of Proteas.

When asked about player presence and the decision-making behind their run of play with the active squad, he explained, “There are some decisions I’m not included in”.

Khan also discussed the progress of the emerging talent in the team and spoke particularly about the young duo of Haider Ali and Asif Ali.

“Haider Ali is hoping to become a top player,” he said.

“When he made his debut against England, what did he score on his second ball in international cricket? He hit a six and scored a fifty on debut. I have that written in my diary — I am not drawing cartoons but note down all bits and pieces about players and work with them on those points,” Khan remarked.

The legendary batsman further explained that the management needs to give more chances to players like Asif Ali because “every player is not as strong-minded as Javed Miandad or Shahid Afridi or Saeed Anwar”.

He noted,

Players like Asif Ali, Haider Ali and Danish Aziz should be given opportunities so that we can get the best out of them. When players are getting so much support, then they should also give their best and play for their country.

While expressing his commitment and hope that these players will improve after getting more play time, Khan lauded Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam for playing long innings against South Africa and expects the duo to perform even better in the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
