Sony Engineers Show How Xperia 1 III’s Camera Was Made

Huawei and OnePlus get outside help from brands such as Leica and Hasselblad to develop their cameras, but that is not the case with Sony. The Japanese phone maker has its own excellent camera division made of engineers that work on its Alpha DSLR cameras.

These engineers helped develop the cameras for Sony’s previous flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 II and they’ve done it again for this year’s phones, the Xperia 1 III and 5 III. The video below shows the engineers talking about how the camera was designed and the reasoning behind some of their choices.

The entire camera assembly was developed in-house, including the lenses, the sensor, and the image processing. This allowed the team to tune the components to work well with others.

The Xperia 1 III’s camera borrows Real-Time Tracking from the Alpha lineup. This is a feature that uses AI to track objects, though it sometimes has trouble distinguishing between two subjects, for instance, two soccer players in the same uniform. This weakness is covered by the 3D ToF sensor which provides the depth data to help the AI tell the players apart.

These cameras have been tuned for the needs of sports photography since they are capable of tracking fast-moving objects very easily. They also come with more zoom support thanks to a dual focal length telephoto lens, allowing you to capture the action without getting close.
