Former Indian opener and current commentator, Aakash Chopra, believes that it is impossible for the ICC World T20 to be held in India, with United Arab Emirates (UAE) being considered as the most likely venue for the mega event.
The 14th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) was recently suspended due to the dire situation in the country and a number of COVID-19 cases within the franchises. The tournament has been suspended indefinitely, with the BCCI still unsure about the resumption of the league. Once again, UAE is being considered to host the remainder of the IPL.
Pakistan Super League (PSL), on the other hand, is also likely to shift to the UAE. PSL franchises recently requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to move the remainder of the tournament to UAE as the COVID-19 situation in the country has not improved.
Aakash Chopra has claimed that there is no chance the tournament will go ahead in India in the current circumstances.
” I don’t think T20 World Cup will take place in India this year. I think it will be shifted to UAE, which was selected as the standby venue. I don’t think we can pull it off here [in India] due to rising cases,” said Chopra
“Even if we contain it, it’s just too much of a risk with people coming in and traveling from one city to the other. You just cannot do it,” he added.
India has been hit hard by the pandemic, with over 3 million active cases and around 300,000 new cases being reported every 24 hours. Pakistan, on the other hand, has also suffered during the third wave, with over 4,000 cases reported in the previous 24 hours.
