Government to create a foolproof i-voting mechanism for Pakistanis living abroad

The Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) has called on the Federal Government to provide a timetable for developing a suitable I-voting system for Pakistani citizens abroad.

The Election Committee asked for a time limit for preparing the i-vote, free from the threats of global hacking, for the parliamentary, internal and national data base and registry (NADRA) secretaries.

The Commission also pointed out in its letter that during the third party audit, the system did not advocate the use of the technology. Errors were identified in the i-voting system.

The Second Amendment to Ordinance No 2021, entitling Pakistanis from outside the country to vote and the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) throughout the election process, was promulgated in May by President Arif Alvi.

The President has made adjustments to sections 94 (1) and 103 of the Election Act 2017 in accordance with the order issued by the Chair.

The amendments will help to ensure that Pakistani people from abroad vote in the next general election.
