Samsung Unveils the First 5G Modem for Cars

In terms of compute power and connectivity, cars are catching up to smartphones: future versions will be able to connect to 5G networks and experience download rates of up to 5.1 Gbps owing to Samsung’s new modem.

The Exynos Auto T5123 is the world’s first 5G modem designed particularly for automotive applications, and it’s already in mass production. Because car parts must meet high durability and lifetime requirements, automakers are unable to use semiconductors designed for cellphones.

This device is much more than a modem. It has two Cortex-A55 CPU cores and can offer navigational satellite positioning data. This chip decreases the total chip count for the car by doing double duty, simplifying the design.

The Exynos Auto V7 chipset (8 nm) can be the brains of the infotainment solution for mid to high-end vehicles, while the T5123 handles networking and positioning.
