Fake News Alert: ATMs and Online Banking Are Not Down in Pakistan

The National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) has issued a cybersecurity advisory in response to misleading information circulating on social media and messaging platforms.

The advisory, developed in consultation with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and other relevant stakeholders, clarifies that there have been no reported incidents of ATM closures or disruptions to online banking services. Banking infrastructures, including ATMs, continue to function smoothly.

The advisory stated that financial institutions are closely monitoring for any potential cyber threats to prevent panic among the public by dispelling these false rumors. The public is advised to ignore the misinformation and instead seek accurate guidance directly from their banks or financial institutions.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and National CERT are actively collaborating with banks to ensure the ongoing security and resilience of the country’s financial infrastructure.

The advisory also highlights the importance of cybersecurity vigilance. Users are reminded to be cautious when using ATMs and conducting online transactions, reporting any suspicious activity to their banks. The advisory emphasizes the need to protect personal and financial information by not sharing payment card details, PINs, OTPs, User IDs, and passwords.

Before using an ATM, customers should check for unusual attachments that could be used for data skimming. The public is also advised against clicking on untrusted links or sharing personal information online. Logging out of online banking sessions after use and regularly reviewing account statements for unauthorized transactions are recommended practices.

According to the advisory, in case of suspicious activity or potential scams, individuals should report immediately to their bank and notify the National CERT through the provided contact points.

According to the NCERT, the advisory has been issued to enhance public awareness and protect the security of financial transactions nationwide.
