In a move that appears to prioritize company needs over the users, X is developing a new feature as part of its ambitious plan to evolve into an ‘everything app’. The social media giant is currently testing a video conferencing tool dubbed ‘X Conference’, which seems to be a direct competitor to popular platforms like Zoom.
This new feature was brought to light by X employee Chris Park, who shared details about the internal testing on the platform itself.
According to the information provided by Park, X Conference appears to be in its early stages of development. The tool offers basic multi-person video conferencing capabilities, falling short of the more advanced features in established services such as Zoom or Google Meet.
According to Park, X Conference is set to receive some notable upgrades soon. He mentioned that features such as the ability to pin speakers and enhanced notifications are likely to be added soon. Park claimed that the tool is already a formidable competitor to established platforms like Google Hangouts, Zoom, AWS Chime, and even Microsoft Teams.
Earlier this month, app researcher Nima Owji provided additional insights into X Conference. Owji shared a screenshot revealing that the platform is expected to support spatial audio and offer built-in captions. These features, while impressive, may not be enough to set X Conference apart in an already crowded market.
Despite the enthusiasm from X employees and the addition of these features, questions remain about the demand for yet another video conferencing tool. It’s unclear whether X plans to roll out this feature to end users in the future.
