Punjab Food Authority Shuts Down Mayonnaise Factory

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has stepped up its crackdown on unsafe food practices in Lahore, targeting businesses that breach health and safety regulations. Recently, it shut down a mayonnaise unit in Mehrpura, imposing a 100,000 fine and seizing 600 kilograms of substandard and unsafe mayonnaise for destruction.

The unit was closed due to non-compliance with prior directives and poor sanitation. DG Asim Javed highlighted issues including untrained staff lacking medical certificates, inadequate personal hygiene, a malfunctioning freezer, fungal-covered walls, and an unsanitary restroom located in the processing area.

The unit was also found using prohibited color additives and non-food grade blue drums for storage. A case was filed against the owner for misleading labeling, leading to the unit’s closure.

Asim Javed stressed that violations of food safety principles will not be tolerated and warned that any food or ingredients contributing to health risks will be banned.
