The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has commenced the second phase of its crackdown on illegal mobile phone SIMs across the country. The operation, which began on September 2, 2024, targets SIMs registered against expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) issued before 2017.
This step is part of a broader effort by the PTA to curb the misuse of SIM cards and tighten security measures in collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The ongoing operation follows the PTA’s collaboration with NADRA, which provided critical data on expired and invalid CNICs. In response, the PTA has urged consumers to renew their expired CNICs with NADRA and complete the necessary biometric verification processes to avoid disruptions in connectivity. By ensuring that all SIMs are linked to valid, up-to-date identity documents, the PTA aims to minimize the illegal use of mobile networks.
The initiative against illegal SIMs began on August 16, 2024, during which the PTA successfully blocked over 69,000 SIM cards linked to canceled or fake identity cards.
According to PTA, the third phase of the blocking operation is scheduled to begin on October 16, 2024. During this phase, the PTA will focus on SIM cards registered in the names of deceased individuals. To prevent their SIMs from being blocked, consumers have been advised to update their information with NADRA and their respective mobile phone operators.
PTA emphasized that the misuse of mobile phone SIMs, often linked to various illegal activities such as terrorism, online crimes, and financial fraud, will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
These illegal SIMs pose a significant threat to national security and public safety, facilitating criminal activities that undermine the rule of law. By ensuring that all SIMs are registered with valid and up-to-date identity documents, the PTA aims to curb the illegal use of mobile networks, protect citizens, and maintain the integrity of the country’s telecommunications system.
