The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an urgent alert regarding a surge in phishing scams targeting social media users. Hackers are sending links and demanding One-Time Passwords (OTPs) from consumers, leading to a rise in Facebook, WhatsApp, and other app hacking incidents.
The PTA has warned users that it will never call, email, or message asking for personal details, passwords, or OTPs. Users are advised not to click on unknown links or share their information to protect themselves from these scams.
To combat these scams, the PTA has asked users to block or report numbers involved in scams to their mobile phone operators or reach out to the PTA directly. Users can register complaints on the PTA website, PTA CMS mobile app, or contact the PTA’s toll-free number.
Additionally, users can also contact the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and report financial fraud to the State Bank of Pakistan. The PTA’s alert comes as a large number of consumers on social media have complained about hacking of accounts and financial frauds through fake links and OTPs.
